Online coding classes for grades 9–12

Wren School’s online coding classes for grades 9–12 are live, 50-minute lessons that meet twice a week in groups of 2, 4 or 8. Teens build on Python fundamentals with data structures, algorithms, data projects and AI foundations, with support for AP Computer Science, from a background-checked tutor in the US or Canada. Plans start at $399 a month, and the first class is free.

What your child learns in grades 9–12 coding

The main topics we teach in this band. Each group works at its own level, so the exact order depends on where the children are.

Python in depth

Functions, files, modules and writing clean code that someone else can read.

Data structures and algorithms

Lists, dictionaries, stacks, queues, recursion and how to reason about efficiency.

Data projects

Cleaning a real data set, finding patterns and presenting results with charts.

AI and machine learning foundations

How models are trained and tested, what bias and overfitting mean, and building a simple model.

AP Computer Science support

What a typical week looks like

Your child has two live 50-minute classes a week with the same small group. Classes run like a small studio: a short concept talk, a live-coded example, then students work on their own problem while the tutor reviews code with each of them. Students regularly present and review each other’s code.

Is this the right class for your child?

A good fit for

  • Teens who have done some coding and want structure and depth
  • Teens taking or planning AP Computer Science
  • Teens curious about AI who want to understand it, not just use it

Probably not the right fit

  • Complete beginners who can’t yet type comfortably. A grades 6–8 group may suit them better.
  • Teens looking for a university credit course.

How we place your child

Children are grouped by grade and current level, not just age. The free trial class shows us where your child is, and if a group turns out to be too easy or too hard, we move them.

Choose a group size

Same tutor quality and the same topics in every size. Smaller groups give each child more individual time.

Group of 2

Near one-on-one attention with a study partner. Best for closing gaps or moving fast.

From $949 / month · about $119 a class

CAD $1,299 / month

Group of 4

Plenty of individual time plus real discussion. Our most balanced option.

From $649 / month · about $81 a class

CAD $899 / month

Group of 8

Small, never crowded. Every child still speaks up, with more ideas in the room.

From $399 / month · about $50 a class

CAD $549 / month

Prices are per child per month for 8 live 50-minute classes (two a week). See full pricing.

Questions about grades 9–12 coding classes

Do you support AP Computer Science A?

We support AP Computer Science coursework. AP Computer Science A uses Java, while our core classes use Python, so tell us which course your teen is taking when you book the trial and we’ll confirm the fit.

Can my teen build a portfolio project?

Yes. Data and AI projects in the 9–12 classes are designed to be finished, explained and shown.

Is a group class useful for experienced coders?

Yes, if they are placed at the right level. Explaining code to peers and reviewing theirs is a skill working developers use every day.

How much do online coding classes for grades 9–12 cost?

Plans are per child per month for 8 live 50-minute classes: from $399 for a group of 8, $649 for a group of 4 and $949 for a group of 2 (CAD $549, $899 and $1,299). The first trial class is free, with no payment details needed.

How often do classes meet?

Groups meet twice a week for 50 minutes, which makes 8 live classes a month. Your child stays in the same small group, so the tutor gets to know how each student thinks.
