How Ontario math is organized

Ontario’s elementary math curriculum for Grades 1 to 8 was released in 2020 and is organized into six areas: social-emotional learning skills and mathematical processes, number, algebra, data, spatial sense, and financial literacy (Government of Ontario). Two features surprise parents who went to school elsewhere:

  • Coding is part of math from Grade 1. In the province’s words, students “begin to write code to order a sequence of steps.”
  • Fractions start early. The curriculum introduces fractions in Grade 1 “through the concept of equal sharing.”

In high school, Grade 9 math is a single de-streamed course (MTH1W), and senior students choose courses such as Advanced Functions (MHF4U) and Calculus and Vectors (MCV4U).

How our classes fit

We place your child by grade and by the unit they are on now. When you book, tell us the grade, the current topic and anything your child finds hard; a recent report card helps. In class, tutors work on the skills underneath that unit, so what happens at Wren connects to what happens at school.

EQAO: what parents should know

EQAO assesses math in Grades 3, 6 and 9. In 2025–26, 52% of Grade 6 students met the provincial standard in math, compared with 65% in Grade 3 and 59% in Grade 9 (CP24, September 2026). The provincial standard is Level 3, and EQAO says results for Grades 3 and 6 are not included in report card marks (EQAO). Our EQAO Grade 6 math prep guide covers what the assessment looks like and how to practise at home.

Free help, and where live classes fit

TVO Learn Mathify offers free one-on-one online math help from Ontario Certified Teachers for Grade 4 to 12 students in English-language publicly funded schools. It is a good fit for homework questions. Wren School is a regular class: the same small group and tutor, twice a week, building skills over months.

Questions from Ontario parents

Are your classes aligned to the Ontario math curriculum?

We don’t claim formal alignment. We place each child by their grade and the unit they are working on at school, and tutors use that as the starting point. Bring a recent report card or worksheet to the free trial.

Can you help my child prepare for the Grade 6 EQAO math assessment?

We teach the math skills Grade 6 students are expected to know, and we can include practice with the kinds of questions EQAO uses. We are not affiliated with EQAO and we don’t promise particular results.

How much does online math tutoring cost in Ontario?

At Wren School, CAD $549 per child per month for a group of 8, $899 for a group of 4 and $1,299 for a group of 2, each with 8 live 50-minute classes. Free options also exist, such as TVO Learn Mathify for Grades 4 to 12.

Do you support the Grade 9 de-streamed math course?

Yes. Grade 9 students are placed by the course they are taking and their current level. Tell us the course code, such as MTH1W, when you book.
