Small-group online tutoring for kids

Small-group online tutoring puts one tutor with a handful of students at the same level. At Wren School, groups are capped at 2, 4 or 8 children, meet live twice a week for 50 minutes, and cover math, science, coding and English for K–12. Plans run from $399 to $949 per child per month, and the first class is free.

Pick how small

Same subjects and the same tutors in every size. Smaller groups give each child more individual time.

How a small online group works

  1. Placement. Your child takes a free trial class. We use it, plus what you tell us about school, to place them by grade and current level, not just age.
  2. Two live classes a week. The same group meets twice a week for 50 minutes in a private online classroom with video, a shared whiteboard and a tutor who knows every child by name.
  3. Everyone works. With 8 or fewer students, the tutor asks each child to answer, explain and show work every class. Nobody sits quietly at the back.
  4. Families stay informed. You hear how your child is doing and what comes next.

What research says about small groups

Tutoring is one of the better-studied ways to help children learn. A review of randomized trials of PreK–12 tutoring found consistent, substantial gains, and the strongest results came from programs run by teachers and paraprofessionals (Nickow, Oreopoulos and Quan, NBER, 2020). J-PAL’s summary of the evidence adds that students learn the most with at least three sessions a week (J-PAL).

Group size matters. Stanford’s National Student Support Accelerator defines high-impact tutoring as groups of no more than four with a consistent tutor (NSSA), and some studies of online tutoring found larger groups and poor attendance weakened results (The Hechinger Report).

What that means for choosing a Wren group, honestly:

  • For catching up, a group of 2 or a group of 4 fits the research best.
  • A group of 8 suits enrichment and confident learners who enjoy discussion, at a lower price.
  • Wren groups meet twice a week. If your child needs intensive catch-up, add short practice at home between classes.
  • Attendance is the factor families control. Children who come to every class get the most out of any tutoring.

Questions about small-group tutoring

What is small-group online tutoring?

It is live tutoring where one tutor teaches a small group of students, usually between 2 and 8, over video. Students are matched by level, so the tutor can pace the lesson for everyone and still hear from each child.

Is small-group tutoring as good as one-on-one?

Research finds tutoring works well in both formats, but one-on-one tends to do better for the youngest children and for the most intensive catch-up. Small groups cost less and add peer discussion. Matching students by level matters more than the exact size.

How many students are in a Wren School group?

You choose: groups are capped at 2, 4 or 8 students. The cap is a maximum; a group never grows past it.

How much does small-group online tutoring cost?

At Wren School, from $399 per child per month for a group of 8, $649 for a group of 4 and $949 for a group of 2, each with 8 live 50-minute classes (CAD $549, $899 and $1,299).

How often do groups meet?

Twice a week for 50 minutes, which is 8 live classes a month.
