What your child learns in grades 6–8 English

The main topics we teach in this band. Each group works at its own level, so the exact order depends on where the children are.

Essay structure

A clear thesis, body paragraphs that each prove one point, and a conclusion that does more than repeat.

Using evidence

Choosing quotations, explaining them in your own words and connecting them to the argument.

Literary analysis

Theme, character, point of view and the choices an author makes on purpose.

Reading nonfiction

Following an argument, spotting bias and comparing sources.

Grammar that sticks

Sentence variety, punctuation and clarity, practised in students’ own writing.

What a typical week looks like

Your child has two live 50-minute classes a week with the same small group. A typical class discusses a short text, models one writing move (for example, how to explain a quotation), and gives students time to apply it in their own draft while the tutor gives feedback. Students regularly read their work aloud to the group.

Is this the right class for your child?

A good fit for

  • Students who have ideas but struggle to organize an essay
  • Students who summarize when they are asked to analyze
  • Strong writers who want sharper feedback than a large class can give

Probably not the right fit

  • Students who want someone to write or edit their school essays for them. We teach the skills; we don’t write assignments.
  • Students needing a formal learning-difference assessment.

How we place your child

Children are grouped by grade and current level, not just age. The free trial class shows us where your child is, and if a group turns out to be too easy or too hard, we move them.

Choose a group size

Same tutor quality and the same topics in every size. Smaller groups give each child more individual time.

Group of 2

Near one-on-one attention with a study partner. Best for closing gaps or moving fast.

From $949 / month · about $119 a class

CAD $1,299 / month

Group of 4

Plenty of individual time plus real discussion. Our most balanced option.

CAD $899 / month

Group of 8

Small, never crowded. Every child still speaks up, with more ideas in the room.

From $399 / month · about $50 a class

CAD $549 / month

Questions about grades 6–8 English classes

Can the tutor help with my child’s school essays?

Tutors can use a school assignment as practice and give feedback on structure and evidence. They won’t write or rewrite it for your child; the aim is for your child to do it themselves.

What is the difference between summarizing and analyzing?

A summary says what happens. Analysis explains how and why the author made it happen and what it means. Moving from one to the other is the biggest jump in middle school English.

How much writing will my child do?

Some writing in every class, and usually one piece revised each week with tutor feedback.

How much do online English classes for grades 6–8 cost?

Plans are per child per month for 8 live 50-minute classes: from $399 for a group of 8, $649 for a group of 4 and $949 for a group of 2 (CAD $549, $899 and $1,299). The first trial class is free, with no payment details needed.

How often do classes meet?

Groups meet twice a week for 50 minutes, which makes 8 live classes a month. Your child stays in the same small group, so the tutor gets to know how each student thinks.
