What your child learns in grades K–2 math

The main topics we teach in this band. Each group works at its own level, so the exact order depends on where the children are.

Counting and number sense

Counting forward and back, counting on from any number, comparing numbers and seeing quantities at a glance (five on a die, ten on two hands).

Place value

Tens and ones, using base-ten pictures and bundles, so that 34 means three tens and four ones rather than two digits side by side.

Adding and subtracting

Strategies before memorizing: making ten, doubles and near doubles, counting on a number line, then fact fluency within 20.

Shapes and measurement

Naming and sorting 2D and 3D shapes, measuring length with objects and rulers, telling time and counting coins.

First word problems

Acting out and drawing short stories with numbers, and answering the question every tutor asks: “How do you know?”

What a typical week looks like

Your child has two live 50-minute classes a week with the same small group. Young children learn in short bursts, so a K–2 class changes activity often: a counting warm-up, a new idea shown with objects your child has at home, a game or puzzle in pairs, and a quick show-me check at the end. With 2 to 8 children, each child gets several turns to answer out loud in every class.

Is this the right class for your child?

A good fit for

  • Children who need more confidence with numbers before grade 3
  • Quick learners who are bored and ready for puzzles
  • Kindergartners who can join a video call with a parent nearby for the first few classes

Probably not the right fit

  • A child who can’t yet stay with a video call for 50 minutes, even with breaks. Waiting a few months is fine.
  • Families who want worksheet drills to do alone. Our classes are live and talk-based.

How we place your child

Children are grouped by grade and current level, not just age. The free trial class shows us where your child is, and if a group turns out to be too easy or too hard, we move them.

Choose a group size

Same tutor quality and the same topics in every size. Smaller groups give each child more individual time.

Group of 2

Near one-on-one attention with a study partner. Best for closing gaps or moving fast.

Questions about grades K–2 math classes

Is a 50-minute class too long for a kindergartner?

It can be for some five-year-olds. Tutors switch activities every few minutes and use games and objects from home, and a parent nearby helps for the first few classes. The free trial is a good way to see how your child copes.

Does my child need to read to join a K–2 math class?

No. Tutors read problems aloud and use pictures and objects. Children who are still learning to read can take part fully.

What materials do we need at home?

Paper, a pencil and a handful of small objects to count, such as coins, dried pasta or building bricks, plus a computer or tablet with a camera and microphone.

How much do online math classes for grades K–2 cost?

Plans are per child per month for 8 live 50-minute classes: from $399 for a group of 8, $649 for a group of 4 and $949 for a group of 2 (CAD $549, $899 and $1,299). The first trial class is free, with no payment details needed.

How often do classes meet?

Groups meet twice a week for 50 minutes, which makes 8 live classes a month. Your child stays in the same small group, so the tutor gets to know how each student thinks.
