What your child learns in grades 3–5 math

The main topics we teach in this band. Each group works at its own level, so the exact order depends on where the children are.

Multiplication and division

What multiplying means (equal groups, arrays, area) before fact practice, then division as the same idea run backwards.

Fractions

Fractions as numbers on a number line, equivalent fractions, comparing with benchmarks like ½, and adding and subtracting, first with like denominators.

Decimals and place value

Tenths and hundredths, how decimals connect to fractions and money, and rounding with a reason.

Area, perimeter and volume

Measuring and comparing shapes, and why area is counted in squares and volume in cubes.

Data and word problems

Reading and making graphs, and multi-step problems where children plan before they calculate.

What a typical week looks like

Your child has two live 50-minute classes a week with the same small group. A typical class opens with a short fluency warm-up, introduces one idea with a visual model on the shared whiteboard, and then moves to practice where each child explains at least one answer out loud. It ends with a short check that tells the tutor what to revisit next time.

Is this the right class for your child?

A good fit for

  • Children who are shaky on multiplication facts or fractions
  • Children who get right answers but can’t explain them
  • Strong students who want harder problems than school gives them

Probably not the right fit

  • Families looking only for timed fact drills. Apps do that more cheaply.
  • A child who needs help across every subject at once. Pick the subject that matters most first.

How we place your child

Children are grouped by grade and current level, not just age. The free trial class shows us where your child is, and if a group turns out to be too easy or too hard, we move them.

Choose a group size

Same tutor quality and the same topics in every size. Smaller groups give each child more individual time.

Group of 2

Near one-on-one attention with a study partner. Best for closing gaps or moving fast.

From $949 / month · about $119 a class

CAD $1,299 / month

Group of 4

Plenty of individual time plus real discussion. Our most balanced option.

From $649 / month · about $81 a class

CAD $899 / month

Group of 8

Small, never crowded. Every child still speaks up, with more ideas in the room.

From $399 / month · about $50 a class

CAD $549 / month

Questions about grades 3–5 math classes

My child hates fractions. Can a small class help?

Often, yes. Most fraction trouble comes from seeing a fraction as two separate numbers instead of one amount. In a small group the tutor can hear that misunderstanding and fix it with number lines and fraction strips.

Should my third grader already know their times tables?

Most schools expect children to understand multiplication in grade 3 and to become fluent with facts by the end of that year or the next. Understanding comes first; speed builds with short daily practice.

Can a strong fourth or fifth grader move ahead?

Yes. We place children by level, not just grade, so an advanced child can join a group working on harder material. A group of 2 suits children who are far ahead.

How much do online math classes for grades 3–5 cost?

Plans are per child per month for 8 live 50-minute classes: from $399 for a group of 8, $649 for a group of 4 and $949 for a group of 2 (CAD $549, $899 and $1,299). The first trial class is free, with no payment details needed.

How often do classes meet?

Groups meet twice a week for 50 minutes, which makes 8 live classes a month. Your child stays in the same small group, so the tutor gets to know how each student thinks.
