What your child learns in grades 6–8 math

The main topics we teach in this band. Each group works at its own level, so the exact order depends on where the children are.

Ratios, rates and percent

Proportional reasoning with tables, double number lines and unit rates, then percent problems that show up in real life.

Negative numbers

Operations with integers and rational numbers, using number lines and context so the sign rules make sense.

Expressions and equations

Writing and simplifying expressions, solving one- and two-step equations and inequalities, and checking answers.

Pre-algebra to Algebra 1

Linear relationships, slope, graphing lines and an introduction to systems, for students who are ready.

Geometry

Angles, area of composite shapes, surface area and volume, and the Pythagorean theorem.

Statistics and probability

Sampling, comparing data sets and simple probability.

What a typical week looks like

Your child has two live 50-minute classes a week with the same small group. Classes start with a short review problem, introduce one idea through an example the group works together, and then move to practice where students compare methods. Middle schoolers are asked to explain why a step is allowed, not just what the step is, because that habit is what makes algebra stick.

Is this the right class for your child?

A good fit for

  • Students who did well in elementary math but are struggling with abstract topics
  • Students preparing for Algebra 1 in grade 8 or 9
  • Students who need a steady place to ask questions their class moves past

Probably not the right fit

  • A student who needs a full course credit. We support learning; we don’t issue school credits.
  • Last-minute cramming the night before a test. Small groups work best over weeks.

How we place your child

Children are grouped by grade and current level, not just age. The free trial class shows us where your child is, and if a group turns out to be too easy or too hard, we move them.

Choose a group size

Same tutor quality and the same topics in every size. Smaller groups give each child more individual time.

Group of 2

Near one-on-one attention with a study partner. Best for closing gaps or moving fast.

From $949 / month · about $119 a class

CAD $1,299 / month

Group of 4

Plenty of individual time plus real discussion. Our most balanced option.

From $649 / month · about $81 a class

CAD $899 / month

Group of 8

Small, never crowded. Every child still speaks up, with more ideas in the room.

From $399 / month · about $50 a class

CAD $549 / month

Prices are per child per month for 8 live 50-minute classes (two a week). See full pricing.

Questions about grades 6–8 math classes

Should my child take Algebra 1 in 8th grade?

It depends on readiness, not age. Children who are fluent with fractions, comfortable with negative numbers and can solve two-step equations usually cope well. If those are shaky, a strong pre-algebra year can be the better choice.

My child was good at math until middle school. What changed?

Middle school math becomes abstract: letters stand for numbers and problems have several steps. Small gaps from earlier grades, often in fractions, start to show. Finding and fixing those gaps usually brings confidence back.

Can the class help with school homework?

Classes follow a group plan, but tutors connect it to what students are doing at school, and children can bring questions. For intensive help on one child’s homework, a group of 2 gives the most room.

How much do online math classes for grades 6–8 cost?

Plans are per child per month for 8 live 50-minute classes: from $399 for a group of 8, $649 for a group of 4 and $949 for a group of 2 (CAD $549, $899 and $1,299). The first trial class is free, with no payment details needed.

How often do classes meet?

Groups meet twice a week for 50 minutes, which makes 8 live classes a month. Your child stays in the same small group, so the tutor gets to know how each student thinks.
